A note before we begin on using AI safely for financial information

Before you use AI with any financial data, please read this carefully.

AI output is not always accurate — and it doesn't tell you when it's wrong
AI tools including Claude can produce plausible-sounding answers that contain errors. This is known as "hallucination." AI is also non-deterministic — meaning it may give different answers to the same question at different times. Never treat AI output as a final or definitive answer on any financial, tax or legal matter. Always verify figures, categories and ATO rules independently before acting on them.

How to critically evaluate AI output
Before relying on anything AI tells you:

  • Cross-check deductibility claims at ato.gov.au directly
  • Verify tax rates and thresholds against current ATO publications — these change each financial year
  • Have a registered tax agent or accountant review categorisations and calculations before lodging
  • If something looks surprisingly good (a large deduction you hadn't considered) — question it, don't assume it's right

Your data — what you need to check before uploading anything
When you upload financial data to any AI tool, your information is handled by that platform's privacy policy — not by Champion Women. Before uploading bank statements or financial records:

  • Claude (Anthropic): Go to claude.ai → Settings → Privacy → turn off "Improve Claude for everyone" to prevent your conversations being used for model training. Claude Pro and Teams plans offer stronger data protections — review at anthropic.com/privacy
  • ChatGPT (OpenAI): Go to Settings → Data Controls → turn off "Improve the model for everyone"
  • Remove sensitive identifiers before uploading any CSV: account numbers, BSB, client names, Tax File Number (TFN). Standard bank CSV exports often don't include these — but always check before uploading
  • Never upload documents containing TFNs, passwords, or full account credentials to any AI tool
  • Consider using fictional or anonymised test data to explore AI capabilities before uploading real financial records

What AI is and isn't appropriate for
✅ Appropriate: organising and categorising transactions for your own review, drafting questions to ask your accountant, understanding general ATO concepts, saving time on preparation work

❌ Not appropriate: making final deductibility decisions, lodging returns based solely on AI output, assuming AI-calculated figures are correct without verification, uploading data containing client or third-party information without their knowledge

Demo data: All transaction descriptions, dollar figures, business names and financial outcomes shown in the interactive demo above are entirely fictional and created for illustration purposes only. They do not represent the finances of any real individual or business, including Champion Women.

Data privacy: This page does not collect, store or transmit any financial data. When you upload your own bank statement to Claude, your data is handled according to Anthropic's privacy policy — review this at https://www.anthropic.com/privacy before uploading sensitive information. Recommended practice: remove or redact your full account number and BSB before uploading any CSV file. Never include your Tax File Number (TFN) in anything uploaded to an AI tool.

About Claude and which plan to use: Claude is available free at https://claude.ai The free plan is a good starting point. Claude Pro (paid subscription) is recommended for this type of work — it provides larger file uploads, faster responses, and access to Projects, which gives Claude memory of your business context across sessions so you don't re-explain every time. For business teams, Claude for Work (Teams plan) adds Coworker and Agents — AI that can take actions and automate workflows across your tools and systems. Training and support in using Claude Projects, Coworker and Agents effectively in your business is available through Champion Women — reach out to discuss.

Not financial or tax advice: prompts, sample responses and guidance on this page are for educational and illustrative purposes only. They do not constitute financial, taxation or legal advice. AI can help you organise, understand and prepare your financial records — it does not replace a registered tax agent or accountant.
